Barn Hunt Information

** We are not a licensed Barn Hunt club **

In Barn Hunt, dogs are trained to run an obstacle course that's studded with a number of live rats (in aerated PVC tubes), plus empty tubes that may or may not smell like rat.

  • Dogs have to jump onto straw bales and crawl through dark, winding tunnels to find an ever-increasing number of hidden rats. 
  • The rats are pets that are said to enjoy the interaction with the dogs — and officials called "rat wranglers"  ensure they're treated humanely.


New dogs must do a meet the rat session. That is the only session you need to schedule for your first time. Once the trainers tell you your dog can work in a Ring Rental, you can schedule that.

Meet the Rats

This is for NEW dogs that haven't engaged with the rats. Some dogs need to do this several times before they are ready to do Ring Rental or workshops. Dogs are shown the rat in a cage and then in a tube if they are excited and engaged with the rat. 


Cost is $15 for 15 minutes 1 dog.

Sessions in the Barn Hunt ring are available for 15 minutes with 1 dog at a time.  For dogs actively training or trialing their dogs. Rat Wranglers assist owners with hiding rat tubes and removing them as the dog finds them. Instruction for new dogs in the ring is offered. 


Cost is $20 for 1 dog for 15 minutes.

Ultimutt Knoxville Barn Hunt Workshops

TUNNEL WORKSHOP - coming soon

For dogs that are currently trialing and need help doing all levels of tunnels

Cost is $75 cash or check at workshop ($80 for CC prior to date)

Limited to 8 teams


NOVICE / OPEN  WORKSHOP - coming soon

For dogs that are currently trialing or ready to trial.  Dogs must have successfully met the rats

For dogs that are currently trialing in Senior or Master level.

 VACCINATIONS

We recommend the following Vaccinations. If your dog doesn't have all of these please email  trish@ultimuttknoxville with an explanation of the circumstances.

• *Bordetella (the intranasal 6 month that includes Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Bordetella is highly recommended)

• *Canine Influenza (H3N2 or H3N2/H3N8.The combination vaccine is highly recommended. Both the first shot and booster required before attending.)

• Rabies 1 year or 3 year (once old enough for puppies)

• DHLPP annual or equivalent (or puppy series)


*The first two are not part of the regular vaccines routinely given and have to be asked for.   The flu shot is a 2 part series 2-3 weeks from the 1st shot.
